How do you like them apples?
In the 6th Century BC, the Romans cultivated some 37 varieties of apples. Today, you can find around 7,500 different kinds.
And right here at home?
Just about one dozen varieties:
to bite into: firm, juicy and crunchy i.e.: McIntosh, Red Delicious, Golden Russet
oven lovers: sweet, and holding their form i.e.: Gala, Idared
for pies: less juicy, slightly sharp i.e.: Cortland, Granny Smith and Fuji
apple sauce specialists: keeping their appetizing colour i.e.: Melba, Yellow Delicious
and let ’s not forget those all-purpose superstars that we bite into and bake to our heart’s content! i.e.: Empire, Spartan and Rome Beauty
Apples contain potassium, vitamin C and fibre. Most of the nutrition is found in their skin, so it’s always better to eat them unpeeled!
