Nous \u00e9tions estomaqu\u00e9s de voir les clients foncer dans le stationnement comme les poissons dans le filet de la p\u00eache miraculeuse. Cette extraordinaire affluence stimulait nos facult\u00e9s cr\u00e9atrices \u00e0 un point tel que la moindre demande se transformait illico en une surprise gastronomique!<\/p>\n<p>Ainsi, par un beau matin, Martha, une ancienne compagne de survie, se pr\u00e9senta tout endimanch\u00e9e avec son mari et me h\u00e9la comme l\u2019aurait fait la princesse Diana \u00e0 travers le clic-clac des appareils photo.<\/p>\n<p>\"Cora! Viens rencontrer Saul, mon mari! Pis tant qu\u2019\u00e0 venir, me ferais-tu une surprise?\"<\/p>\n<p>Le regard de Martha glissa entre les plats \u00e9num\u00e9r\u00e9s dans le menu sans qu\u2019aucun soubresaut ne finisse par me donner un indice de ce qui lui plairait. Sa t\u00eate voulait des fruits et son ventre, une orgie \u00e0 la cr\u00e8me p\u00e2tissi\u00e8re\u2026 J\u2019ai toujours ador\u00e9 la gourmandise de Martha, cette fa\u00e7on qu\u2019elle a de s\u2019extasier, et de ne jamais s\u2019asseoir trop longtemps sur la m\u00eame feuille de laurier.<\/p>\n<p>Ainsi, j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 par ressortir de sa bo\u00eete une des vieilles coupes \u00e0 sundae que l\u2019ancien propri\u00e9taire avait laiss\u00e9e dans l\u2019inventaire du fonds de commerce. Je l\u2019ai remplie de petits morceaux des meilleurs fruits du comptoir et je les ai arros\u00e9s de cr\u00e8me p\u00e2tissi\u00e8re \u00e9claircie \u00e0 la cr\u00e8me 15\u00a0%. J\u2019ai ensuite fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 une belle coupole sur le dessus en utilisant des d\u00e9coupures de poires en forme d\u2019\u00e9ventail, de minces rondelles brunes de prunes, de petits escaliers de pommes, des \u00e9toiles de caramboles et de minuscules lampadaires mauves de bleuets sur des triangles jaunes d\u2019ananas et des bisous rouges de framboises.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019\u00e9tait ravissant. Un d\u00e9jeuner en forme de bouquet comme un honneur rendu \u00e0 la saison des r\u00e9coltes. Mais la beaut\u00e9 n\u2019allait pas suffire pour satisfaire la r\u00e9clamation alimentaire de la demanderesse, je le savais trop bien\u2026 J\u2019ai donc command\u00e9 \u00e0 la cuisine un bagel bien r\u00f4ti, juste comme madame les aime, je l\u2019ai d\u00e9pos\u00e9 dans une grande assiette en verre, au pied de la coupe garnie, et je l\u2019ai g\u00e9n\u00e9reusement accompagn\u00e9 d\u2019une belle tranche de formage \u00e0 la cr\u00e8me sur laquelle j\u2019ai pris soin de stationner deux sentinelles de grosses fraises.<\/p>\n<p>La charpente de fruits n\u2019eut pas le temps de se rendre \u00e0 la terrasse qu\u2019une cliente s\u2019exclama\u00a0:<\/p>\n<p>\"C\u2019est magique! Dites \u00e0 Cora que ses mains sont magiques!\"<\/p>\n<p>Ce fut effectivement magique, et dame Martha se leva pour applaudir lorsqu\u2019on d\u00e9posa la nouvelle gourmandise sur sa table! Martha fut cat\u00e9gorique\u00a0: elle refusa qu\u2019un nom aussi ancien que le sien soit utilis\u00e9 pour nommer l\u2019invention.
