Cette premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 l\u2019op\u00e9ra \u00e9tait sur ma <em>bucket list<\/em> depuis toujours et je m\u2019empresse ce matin de vous raconter cette soir\u00e9e irr\u00e9aliste et sublime.<\/p>\n<p>Je suis arriv\u00e9e dans le Quartier des spectacles assez t\u00f4t, vers 17\u00a0h\u00a030, et le temps doux m\u2019incita \u00e0 marcher \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur\u00a0 45\u00a0bonnes minutes avant d\u2019entrer dans le royaume de Puccini o\u00f9 un commentateur aguerri invitait la foule \u00e0 la pr\u00e9sentation de l\u2019\u0153uvre.<\/p>\n<p>D\u00e9j\u00e0, j\u2019\u00e9tais \u00e9blouie. Je connaissais l\u2019histoire, mais je pensais avoir oubli\u00e9 la jeune geisha Cio-Cio-San. Pourtant, lorsque le commentateur nous fit entendre les principaux airs de musique de Madame Butterfly, je les reconnaissais.<\/p>\n<p>Toute jeune femme, avant m\u00eame de subir les d\u00e9boires d\u2019un \u00e9poux, j\u2019adorais la voix humaine. Pavarotti \u00e9tait mon h\u00e9ros souvent accompagn\u00e9 de Pl\u00e1cido Domingo et de Jos\u00e9\u00a0Carreras. La puissance de leurs voix me chavirait. J\u2019\u00e9tais \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque une pure intellectuelle r\u00eavant de r\u00e9\u00e9crire l\u2019histoire du monde. C\u2019est pourtant ce monde \u00e0 ma porte qui me coula dans d\u2019\u00e9troits ruisseaux, m\u2019obligeant \u00e0 nager \u00e0 contre-courant vers ma r\u00e9elle nature. J\u2019avais 15\u00a0ans, l\u2019\u00e2ge de la jeune geisha de Puccini et d\u00e9j\u00e0, j\u2019adorais la voix humaine. J\u2019avais conscience que cette voix \u00e9tait un tr\u00e9sor cach\u00e9, une \u00e9ruption volcanique capable d\u2019adoucir les pires chagrins. Et j\u2019allais \u00e9ventuellement m\u2019en servir pour me remettre au monde.<\/p>\n<p>Treize longues ann\u00e9es d\u2019\u00e9pousailles g\u00e2ch\u00e9es m\u2019avaient priv\u00e9e de musique et de voix divines. Mais j\u2019allais me reb\u00e2tir. Do, r\u00e9, mi, fa, sol, la, si. Je me suis enfuie et j\u2019ai retrouv\u00e9 ma vie. En 1980, j\u2019\u00e9tais libre comme l\u2019air. J\u2019avais 33\u00a0ans et Andrea\u00a0Bocelli en avait 22. Il chantait comme un dieu et je voulais l\u2019\u00e9pouser. J\u2019avais cette urgence de reprendre le temps perdu. Mais comme disait si bien maman : le lait r\u00e9pandu ne se ramasse pas. J\u2019avais surtout besoin de travailler pour nourrir ma marmaille. Et je l\u2019ai fait, pendant trente ans, d\u2019une voix grave de baryton, autoritaire et puissante.<\/p>\n<p>Me voici donc assise dans la premi\u00e8re rang\u00e9e, devant l\u2019orchestre. Le rideau, un immense paravent japonais, s\u2019ouvre. Nous sommes \u00e0 Nagasaki et Goro, le marieur du canton fait visiter \u00e0 l\u2019officier am\u00e9ricain Pinkerton sa nouvelle maison. Il lui pr\u00e9sente Suzuki, la nouvelle servante de sa future \u00e9pouse. Le consul des \u00c9tats-Unis est pr\u00e9sent et il met en garde Pinkerton contre son union avec Cio-Cio-San, jeune geisha de quinze ans, rayonnante de bonheur \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de ce mariage.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019issue de la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie, choqu\u00e9 par le changement de croyance de sa ni\u00e8ce, l\u2019oncle de la mari\u00e9e la renie. La famille de Cio-Cio-San, amoureusement surnomm\u00e9e Madame Butterfly par son bel officier am\u00e9ricain, se retire et un long duo d\u2019amour r\u00e9unit les nouveaux \u00e9poux. Rapidement, Pinkerton doit retourner aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Trois ann\u00e9es passent et Butterfly est toujours sans nouvelle de lui. Son c\u0153ur est convaincu qu\u2019il reviendra. Elle repousse m\u00eame les avances d\u2019un riche prince qu\u2019on lui a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Le consul am\u00e9ricain sait qu\u2019entretemps Pinkerton s\u2019est mari\u00e9 et il doit l\u2019apprendre \u00e0 Butterfly. Celle-ci ne le croit pas et elle attend toujours. Elle lui r\u00e9pond m\u00eame que si c\u2019\u00e9tait vrai, elle se tuerait.<\/p>\n<p>Elle continue donc d\u2019attendre en embellissant sa maison de fleurs et d\u2019espoir. Puis un jour, elle apprend que Pinkerton revient avec une nouvelle \u00e9pouse am\u00e9ricaine. Lorsqu\u2019ils arrivent, Madame Butterfly joue ses derniers instants de vie. Elle confie son jeune enfant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9pouse am\u00e9ricaine et se fait hara-kiri sous les yeux de l\u2019officier am\u00e9ricain.<\/p>\n<p>Goutte \u00e0 goutte, j\u2019ai pleur\u00e9 mon \u00e2me pendant cet op\u00e9ra de Puccini et toute mon accablante souvenance s\u2019est dissoute dans l\u2019eau des larmes de Madame Butterfly. I finally went to Place des Arts in Montreal. Seeing an opera for the first time had been on my bucket list for ever, and I\u2019m eager to tell you about this surreal and sublime evening this morning as I sit here and write.\r\n\r\nI got there early, around 5:30 p.m. It was nice outside, so I went for a walk in the area for nearly an hour before entering Puccini\u2019s kingdom, where an expert host was talking about the opera that was about to take place before our eyes.\r\n\r\nI was already smitten. I knew the storyline. I thought I\u2019d forgotten the music for Cio-Cio-San, the young geisha, but I recognized the famous musical melodies from <em>Madama Butterfly<\/em> when the host played a few strains for us.\r\n\r\nAs a young woman, before suffering the psychological blows of a horrible husband, I adored the human voice. Pavarotti was my hero, and he was often accompanied by Pl\u00e1cido Domingo and Jos\u00e9 Carreras. The power of their voices transported me. I was, at the time, a young thinker with bold dreams of rewriting the world\u2019s history. And yet it\u2019s that very sea of possibilities that carried me into narrow streams, forcing me to swim against the current towards my true self. I was 15, the same age as Puccini\u2019s young geisha, and even back then I loved the human voice. I knew that this voice was a hidden treasure, a volcanic eruption able to soften the most terrible sorrows. And I would eventually use that voice to come back to life.\r\n\r\nThirteen long years wasted in a bad marriage had deprived me of books, music and divine voices. But I wrote a new story for myself. Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti. I escaped and found my life again. In 1980, I was free as a bird. I was 33 and Andrea Bocelli was 22. He sang like a god and I wanted to marry him. I felt this urgency to make up for lost time, but like Mom used to say: \u201cIt\u2019s no use crying over spilled milk.\u201d Most importantly, I had to go back to work to feed my children. And I did, for more than 30 years, with the an authoritative baritone voice.\r\n\r\nSo there I was, seated in the first row, right in front of the orchestra. The curtain, a huge Japanese screen, opened. We are in Nagasaki and then Goro. The town\u2019s matchmaker is giving the American Lieutenant a tour of his new house. He introduces him to Suzuki, his future wife\u2019s new maid. The American Consul is present and warns Pinkerton against his union to Cio-Cio-San, a young 15-year-old geisha, who is beaming with happiness at the thought of the forthcoming nuptials.\r\n\r\nAfter the wedding ceremony, the bride\u2019s uncle disowns her because Cio-Cio-San, lovingly nicknamed Madama Butterfly by her handsome American Lieutenant, has converted to her husband\u2019s religion. The newlyweds then withdraw and sing a long love duet. Shortly after, Pinkerton returns to the United States. Three years go by and Butterfly is still without any word from him. In her heart, she is convinced he will come back to her. She even goes as far as to reject the advances of a wealthy prince whom she meets.\r\n\r\nAs Cio-Cio-San patiently awaits her Lieutenant\u2019s return, the American Consul learns that Pinkerton has remarried and he must announce the news to Butterfly. She doesn\u2019t believe him, however, and continues to wait in vain. She announces that if it were true, she would end her life.\r\n\r\nShe continues to wait for the return of her long lost love while filling her home with flowers and hope. One day, she learns that Pinkerton is returning\u2026 with his new American wife. When he arrives, Madama Butterfly lives the last moments of her life. She places her young son in the care of the new American wife and performs hara-kiri in front of the American Lieutenant.\r\n\r\nI cried my soul out during the opera, and all my heavy memories dissolved in Madama Butterfly\u2019s tears.
