Le temps s\u2019envole et nous sommes encore l\u00e0 \u00e0 compter sur nos doigts les matins qu\u2019il nous reste. J\u2019ai des mouches \u00e0 patates dans mon salon. Elles longent les rebords des fen\u00eatres et je me demande si elles ont pass\u00e9 l\u2019hiver dans ma maison. Chaque fois que mon doigt essaie de toucher une jolie carapace, la coccinelle se soul\u00e8ve et volette \u00e0 petits coups d\u2019ailes, en se posant souvent et en changeant fr\u00e9quemment de direction. Aurai-je assez de doigts pour les compter? Assez d\u2019amour pour ne pas les aspirer avec le boyau de la balayeuse?<\/p>\n

\nIl y a cette jeune fille derri\u00e8re le comptoir qui m\u2019a dit l\u2019autre matin qu\u2019elle \u00e9tait \u00e0 ramasser \u00e0 la petite cuill\u00e8re. Mes doigts ont d\u00fb pitonner sur l\u2019iPad pour comprendre ce que cette ado \u00e0 peine sortie de l\u2019enfance voulait dire.<\/p>\n

Une lectrice\u00a0de\u00a0Sept-\u00celes me dit que je suis sur sa \u00ab\u00a0bucket list<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb pour une rencontre avec elle. Je r\u00eave de voir ces \u00eeles que je peux compter sur mes dix doigts. Google me parle de la poissonnerie Fortier & Fr\u00e8res, des croisi\u00e8res G.W.D. avec brunch en mer; de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Historique du Golfe, du Festi-Gr\u00celes de la C\u00f4te-Nord et des Jardins de Gallix. Wow! J\u2019ai entrevu Sept-\u00celes en pitonnant et mes doigts comptent les heures pour s\u2019y rendre.<\/p>\n

Dimanche dernier, une cliente curieuse du caf\u00e9 me demandait ce que j\u2019ai de plus pr\u00e9cieux et j\u2019ai vite r\u00e9pondu\u00a0: mes doigts, ch\u00e8re dame! Mes dix doigts qui tapent le clavier et qui racontent au monde pratiquement tout ce que je pense.<\/p>\n

Mes deux pouces sont les plus costauds et les plus aidants. Ils savent comment agripper, d\u00e9visser, tourner, serrer tout ce que je d\u00e9sire.<\/p>\n

Mes deux index ressemblent \u00e0 des fl\u00e8ches. Ils sont tr\u00e8s utiles pour indiquer la direction. Je me souviens, toute petite, maman tapait mon index gauche que j\u2019utilisais souvent pour gratter mon nez.<\/p>\n

Ce gros doigt au centre de chacune de mes mains s\u2019appelle le majeur. Comme tant d\u2019hommes, il se pense le plus important parce qu\u2019il est plus long que les autres. Moi, je l\u2019utilise surtout pour bichonner la terre des semis printaniers et aussi pour \u00e9tendre la gouache lavable que j\u2019utilise lorsque j\u2019essaie de rivaliser avec Picasso.<\/p>\n

Le doigt c\u00f4toyant le petit doigt s\u2019appelle l\u2019annulaire. Pendant longtemps, on s\u2019est demand\u00e9 pourquoi il portait cet \u00e9trange nom, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019on lui enfile un anneau dor\u00e9 appel\u00e9 alliance. Mon ancien \u00e9poux a port\u00e9 son alliance pendant environ 45\u00a0minutes. Le temps que la c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de mariage finisse. En sortant de l\u2019\u00e9glise, il me l\u2019a remise en disant que moi seule \u00e9tais mari\u00e9e. Je l\u2019ai gard\u00e9e. Je l\u2019ai toujours, attach\u00e9e \u00e0 la mienne, \u00e0 cause du prix de l\u2019or, je suppose, dans un vieux coffret. \u00c0 bien y penser, \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re occasion, je les vends et m\u2019ach\u00e8te une nouvelle paire de lunettes.<\/p>\n

Le petit doigt a le nom le plus long\u00a0: il s\u2019appelle l\u2019auriculaire. C\u2019est un nom du dimanche qui contient onze lettres. Comme il est difficile de s\u2019en souvenir, nous l\u2019appelons affectueusement \u00ab\u00a0le petit doigt\u00a0\u00bb. Lui seul est capable d\u2019entrer dans une oreille pour calmer une d\u00e9mangeaison. Cela m\u2019arrive assez souvent, surtout lorsque la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision m\u2019empoigne le chignon.<\/p>\n

Imaginez un instant qu\u2019un monstre anthropophage nous coupe les dix doigts. Que ferions-nous? Nos mains deviendraient des mitaines sans doigts? Des petites pelles tout juste bonnes \u00e0 pousser une charge ou \u00e0 recueillir quelques grains de pluie. Un handicap majeur pour tous ceux et celles qui \u00e9crivent au lieu de parler.<\/p>\n

B\u00e9nissons nos doigts, car ils sont aussi pr\u00e9cieux que la prunelle de nos yeux.<\/p>\n

Do I care enough to stop myself from vacuuming them up?\r\n\r\n7:58 a.m. at the coffee shop\r\nBehind the counter, I recognize the young girl who told me the other morning that her life was \u201ccray cray.\u201d I had to look up the expression on my iPad to understand what the young teenager, just barely out of childhood, meant.\r\n\r\nA reader from Sept-\u00celes (a city located on the northwestern side of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence in Quebec city\u2019s North Shore region) tells me that meeting me in person is on her bucket list. I dream of seeing these islands, which I can count on my 10 fingers (\u201csept\u201d is seven in French). Google introduces me to the local venues and events: the Fortier & Fr\u00e8res fish shop; GWD cruises that offers brunch at sea; the St. Lawrence Gulf Society; the \u201cFesti-Gr\u00celes de la C\u00f4te-Nord\u201d (an annual BBQ competition, with local beer tastings and concerts); and the Gallix botanical gardens. I got a glimpse of Sept-\u00celes with just a few clicks of my keyboard. Now my fingers are counting the days until I can visit.\r\n\r\nLast Sunday, a curious patron at the coffee shop asked me what is the most precious thing I have. I quickly replied: my fingers! My 10 fingers, the ones constantly typing away on the keyboard that transmit to the world almost all of my thoughts.\r\n\r\nMy two thumbs are the strongest and most helpful. They know how to grip, unscrew, turn and squeeze anything I want.\r\n\r\nMy two index fingers look like arrows. They are very helpful to point someone in the right direction. I remember when I was very small, Mom would slap my left index finger whenever she saw me scratching my nose with it\u2026\r\n\r\nThe biggest one in the middle of both my hands is called the middle finger. Like so many men, it believes it\u2019s the most important because it\u2019s taller than the others. I mostly use it to prepare the soil for spring planting and to spread the washable gouache as I attempt to rival Picasso.\r\n\r\nThe one that comes before the smallest of them all is called the ring finger. For the longest time, I wondered why it had such a strange name, until someone slipped a gold ring on it. My ex-husband wore his wedding band for about 45 minutes; just long enough for our wedding ceremony to be over. When we walked out of church, he took it off his finger and handed it to me. He told me I was the only one who was married. I kept the ring. I still have it, attached with mine in an old jewellery box. The gold makes them worth something, I suppose. Come to think of it, I should sell them and buy myself a new pair of glasses the first chance I get. Hurrah!\r\n\r\nIn French, the smallest finger has the longest name: auriculaire<\/em>. A proper-sounding name composed of 11 letters. Because its French name is a bit difficult to remember, we affectionately call it \u201cle petit doigt\u201d (\u201cthe little finger\u201d), just like in English. It\u2019s the only one capable of relieving an itch in the ear canal. It happens to me a lot, especially when I\u2019m completely absorbed in a TV show.\r\n\r\nImagine for a moment that a savage monster chops off our 10 fingers. What would we do? Our hands would become fingerless mittens. Small shovels that are only good enough to push a load or collect a few raindrops.
